hen a luxury jungle retreat sets out to create spaces that feel refined yet rooted in nature, every material matters. That was the brief behind Villa Kuji Biri — a private hilltop sanctuary above Santa Teresa on Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula. Tucked into 120,000 square feet of pristine jungle with sweeping Pacific Ocean views, the villa needed interior finishes that could hold their own against such a dramatic setting. We were brought on board to deliver exactly that: custom stone mosaic solutions tailored to the architecture, the color palette, and the raw beauty of the surroundings. |
What followed was a months-long collaboration built on detailed consultation, iterative sampling, and a shared commitment to getting every detail right. Here is how the project came together — from the first sketch to the final installation.

From Conversation to Concept |
Every resort project starts with a conversation. The design team behind Villa Kuji Biri came to us with a clear brief: stone mosaics that echoed the textures of Costa Rica's coastline — organic, layered, and unmistakably natural — while meeting the precision and durability standards of a high-end hospitality space.
Over several rounds of discussion, we dug into the specifics: the villa's palette of raw local stone and warm tropical hardwood, the way natural light moves through its open-plan interiors, and the zones where mosaic would make the strongest impact. We reviewed reference images, exchanged material swatches, and mapped out how each surface would interact with its environment — from the steam of an outdoor shower to the sun-washed walls of the terrace. These early discussions shaped everything that followed.

Sampling, Refining & Locking in the Design |
Once the direction was set, we moved into the sampling phase — the most critical step in any custom mosaic design project. We produced an initial round of physical samples based on the agreed color range and pattern direction, then shipped them to the client's design team in Costa Rica for review.
The first samples sparked a productive back-and-forth. The client wanted slightly cooler greys to offset the warm wood ceilings, and a subtler variation in the stone veining so the mosaic would read as a cohesive surface rather than a busy pattern. We adjusted the stone selection, reworked the cut ratios, and sent a second round. The response was immediate: the design was approved, and we moved into full production.

Where the Mosaics Live |
Villa Kuji Biri's open-plan architecture — floor-to-ceiling glass walls, seamless indoor-outdoor flow — created a range of opportunities for stone mosaic application. Each zone had its own functional and aesthetic requirements, guiding both pattern selection and the installation approach.

Feature Wall Accents
In the main living area and select hallway niches, mosaic panels serve as feature wall accents — focal points that break up expanses of white wall without competing with the ocean panorama just beyond the glass. The pattern we landed on uses a staggered arrangement of rectangular stone chips in a restrained neutral palette, catching light differently throughout the day.

Bathroom Backsplash & Vanity Walls
The villa's four en-suite bathrooms each received a tailored mosaic treatment. Behind the dual vanities in the master suite, we installed a full-height bathroom backsplash in a linear mosaic layout — clean, contemporary, and easy to maintain. We used honed rather than polished stone to keep the surface matte and slip-resistant in humid conditions, an important consideration for a tropical climate.

Shower Floor & Wet Area Flooring
For the indoor and outdoor showers — the master suite features both — we supplied a smaller-format mosaic designed for shower floor use. The tighter chip spacing provides grip underfoot, while the natural variation in the stone masks water spots and keeps the surface looking fresh. In the outdoor shower, exposed to rain, sun, and jungle humidity, we selected stone varieties with proven outdoor performance and low porosity.
